Teaching kids about stranger danger
A recent video showing the attempted abduction of a 7-year-old girl in a Georgia Walmart has many parents thinking about how to teach their kids about stranger danger. The video of the incident shows a man picking a girl up and covering her mouth in an attempt to carry her away while her mother was in another part of the store. However, Brittney Baxter was able to fight off her would-be abductor by kicking and screaming.
She says that she remembered to put an important lesson into action.
"You try to get away and go tell somebody that you trust," Baxter told WPTV News.
Experts say the fact that Brittney was able to fight off her attacker should prompt parents to teach their kids the right way to react if they are ever put in a similar situation. However, discussions of kidnapping or abductions should be age-appropriate and should not frighten them. Instead, they should instill confidence, according to MyChildSafety.net.
"Teach your children that safety is more important than manners," advises the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. "In other words, it is more important for children to get themselves out of a dangerous situation than it is to be polite. They also need to know that it is okay to tell you what happened, and they won't be tattletales."
Online resources such as MissingKids.com, SpeakUpBeSafe.org and MyChildSafety.net can provide parents with information on discussing these issues with their children.
Besides equipping your home with safe baby products, toys, furniture and other household items, these lessons could prove to be valuable.
