Keeping your nursery germ-free
Whether you opt for new or used baby furniture and gear, keeping your little one's nursery clean and germ-free can be a time-consuming job for many parents.According to a recent study commissioned by Playtex, many mothers and expectant mothers simply don't know enough about how to reduce the spread of germs in their child's room. The survey found that only half of those surveyed know that it's important to disinfect germ hot spots such as floors, toys and changing table daily, and that less than half know how to effectively reduce the germs in their home.
"Keeping the nursery as clean and as germ-free as possible is such an important aspect for most parents," said microbiologist Dr. Benjamin Tanner. "But when we surveyed moms, we found that they generally aren't aware of the best ways to do it."
Dr. Tanner says that in addition to cleaning and disinfecting spots such as the changing table, hamper and diaper pail daily, it's important to ensure you're actually getting rid of the germs on these surfaces.
Experts recommend using an EPA-registered disinfectant when cleaning and allowing it to remain wet for 5 to 10 minutes before wiping. Afterwards, wipe the surface down with water to get rid of any chemical residue that may irritate your baby's skin.
Making sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 15 seconds after every diaper change and before feeding or handling a baby is also important to reduce the spread of germs, according to the University of Connecticut Health Center.
When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand-sanitizer.
