Keeping your kids safe in the summer sun
For many families, summer means spending more time outside in the sun. Experts recommend parents apply sunscreen to their children's skin every time they're going outside to prevent sunburn and keep the skin healthy. But are there certain sunscreens that protect better than others? Parents striving to identify and buy safe baby products may be interested in a new list of safe sunscreens - and it comes at the perfect time.
Consumer Reports magazine recently tested 18 popular brands of sunscreen to determine if they protect like they should, according to the new "critical wavelength" test put into place by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The test found two brands offer users the best protection - No-Ad with Aloe & Vitamin E SPF 45 and Walgreens Continuous Spray Sport SPF 50.
On the other hand, brands that did not perform as well as they should included Alba Botanica Natural Very Emollient Sunblock Sport SPF 45 and Banana Boat Kids Tear-Free Sting-Free SPF 50-plus.
Individuals can find the complete list of test results on Consumer Reports.org. However, they should also remember to take additional steps to protect their kids from the sun including applying sunscreen liberally, re-applying every two hours (or after sweating or swimming), using hats and seeking shade when the sun's rays are strongest.
