Community baby shower helps moms in need
Preparing for the arrival of a baby can be expensive. In fact, the author of the popular book Baby Bargains, Dr. Alan Fields, estimates parents will spend an average of about $7,000 before a baby's arrival througout the first year.Expectant parents can save money on everything they need to bring a little one home by opting for used baby gear, used baby furniture, used baby toys and used baby clothes instead of buying these items new.
Some needy moms-to-be in California recently got help preparing for their newborns with a community baby shower.
According to the Contra Costa Times, the shower, which was organized by a Long Beach city council member, provided the women with diaper bags containing some of the things every new mom needs, including clothing, bibs, blankets, wipes and other baby goods.
This is the fifth year the community shower has been held. In total, more than 700 expectant moms have benefited from the program.
"This has been a personal quest of mine because I think it really does send a message that people do care," city councilwoman Gerrie Schipske told the newspaper.
